Daily Photo 2022: Oct. 16-31

Spider silk is so fine, it can be tricky to make out a web. Luckily, the material also collects water in beads. I figured this was an excellent way to begin a post that includes Halloween.

Some people thrive in sunshine, others get giddy over snow. As for me, wind and fog are my favourites. This tree was so vibrantly red, it seemed immune to the usual dulling of mist.

I've always been fond of barcodes. I like how they seem tantalizingly readable while still obviously made for machines. I'd take a barcode over a magnetic strip any day.

Having done a barcode the previous day, I decided to keep with the lineated theme. These stark patterns come from my window shades. As an afficionado of film noir, I can't resist a stripey shade-shadow.

This building site used to be the Mills Brothers store, Halifax's first department store. It was known for having live models in its windows, as well as a very detailed Christmas display. The new building is taller. I suspect it will have commercial on the ground floor and residential above.I've heard that as a tribute, the new spot will be known as the Mills Building.

...And we're back to stripes. These ones are swoopy, though. They're the layers of a coiled camera strap. It's a solid strap. In addition to using it for my camera, I also (perhaps even more often) used it with a water bottle to fashion an impromptu canteen.

I was not entirely sure I should take this photo. I figured it might ruin the surprise from later. This a costume for Hal-Con. My friends and I have made a tradition of wearing a group costume on the Saturday of the convention. This year, we took on a trio from a beloved children's movie.

I am posting two photos from the twenty-third. I took a walk through the Public Gardens and came back with an armload of lovely shots. It was challenging to narrow them down to just two! The first shows a plant enjoying the steady watering from a fountain. The second is a cypress with beautifully-detailed fern-like leaves. I'm not entirely sure they're supposed to change colour in Autumn, but this one decided to give it a go.

Cable management is a difficult proposition in our world of terminals and peripherals. Sometimes, just having the loose lines vaguely clumped together is the best one can do!

Sometimes, you miss your moment... On my way to the climbing gym on the 25th there was a beautiful, dense fog lending lovely atmosphere without getting too wet. As a bus trundled toward me on Summer Street, I knew I was missing a good photo. On my way back from the gym I stopped at the same spot. The mist was lighter and there wasn't a bus. The resulting photo is fine, but I can't help but be nostalgic about the one untaken.

I have it on good authority that when life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade. Well, when life (or just plain clumsiness) gives you an unexpected pile of cinnamon sugar, you should make a macro photograph. This is a bit staged in that I swept the dusty confection into a tidy pile before taking its picture.

Hal-Con was back in full swing this year. My friends Erin and Jamie went with me. On the first day of the convention, we played Hungry Hungry Humans, a kinetic game inspired by Hungry Hungry Hippos. While staying seated in chairs, and using long lacrosse-like poles (broomsticks with duct-taped pasta drainers), the goal is to scoop up as many balls as possible and deposit them in a personal basket. Fun times!

You may have noticed that I forgot to take a photo on October 27th. Well, I am more than making up for that loss! Here are three photos from Hal-Con on Saturday. There's my friends and me dressed up as characters from the animal Robin Hood, a pair of circus performers interpreting Ocarina Of Time (this is their grand finale, set to the music for Kotake and Koume), and also a Dwarf with an impressive beard.

There's a lot to like about Hal-Con. There's a large vendor's floor, where creative types sell all sorts of interesting and unusual things. There are panels where conference-goers can learn new things. There are shows and celebrity appearances. Finally, (and perhaps most famously) there is the costume contest. My favourite costumes were a family who came as Captain Haddock, Madame Castafiore, and Tintin. Also excellent were Leia, and the Dragonborn from Skyrim. Believe you me, it was hard narrowing down to just three shots!

It can be a letdown, returning to the real world after a trip to Hal-Con. Luckily, the descent was slightly more gradual this year. Since the next day was Halloween, we were encouraged to wear an unusual hat and/or wig to work. I gave the Robin Hood cap another run.
