Daily Photo - July 16-31

For 2020, I am photographing every day, and posting the best of each day in half-month increments.

2020 July 16, Thursday

I began my last post with a look at the little peppers growing in my parents' garden. I figured I might as well start this post the same way, so you can see the progress.

I am fascinated with how the same place changes as the months pass. The rocky shore near my house is now quite overgrown with slimy green stuff.

2020 July 18, Saturday

The Covid-19 pandemic is still raging, but for the moment our part of the world is quiet. My parents and I took advantage of the lull to visit my grandparents. I snapped this shot as we passed Aulds Cove on the Canso Causeway.

2020 July 19, Sunday

Quick to Cape Breton, quick back! By Sunday evening I was home. I took a photo of the sunset through the open framework of a passing train. Seeing the ship the previous day and then the train is a reminded that even with the pandemic causing so many people to slow down, many elements of the economy chug on regardless.

2020 July 20, Monday

Looking back at my post from the first half of July, I realized that I never included an overview of the completed patio. Here's a shot of it. I hope eventually to tidy up the landscaping around it. There's the possibility that next year I will get a second load of pavers and expand it, since it is on the small side, but so far it seems to work perfectly well for my purposes.

2020 July 21, Tuesday

This is a photograph I took at work. It is the footing and foundation for a building, before the concrete is poured. After the site has been dug down appropriately and leveled, the shape of the footing is formed with wood planks. Next, rebar is placed to lend stiffness to the concrete. Once I took my picture and had the engineer approve the location of the reinforcing, the contractor was free to start pouring concrete. More wood forms would be added later to keep the wall in shape.

Construction at work, construction at home! This is the intersection just outside my front door. Work is underway to improve the drainage along the street. This will hopefully resolve a very large pothole across the way. If I'm lucky, it will also remove a seasonal wellspring that forms in my driveway each springtime.

2020 July 23, Thursday

Train time! The blur of a time-elapse photo looks much better when it is one of the orange engines leading than a blue one!

2020 July 24, Friday

One of the comments I received on my last SnapDash post was that it was flower-heavy. I resolved to avoid florals this time around to give everyone a break... But then I came across this little guy wearing a crown! How could I resist?

2020 July 25, Saturday

My friends Erin and Jamie came to visit me on the weekend of the 24th. We filled most of our time with board games, but did get in a walk on the Landing Trail, which runs along the estuary's shore opposite to where I live. We saw a heron!

2020 July 26, Sunday

The next morning Jamie and I went for a little stroll on the shore behind my house. We didn't see anything as exciting as a heron, but there was a pleasant spot of rain.

2020 July 27, Monday

I do get fabulous sunsets at my house... They're one of the reasons I built my patio!

2020 July 28, Tuesday

Work on the new ditches has been continuing. I looked out my window on the 28th to see someone hydroseeding the new bank with a water cannon! Unfortunately they were done by the time I grabbed my camera, so while I have a shot of their truck, I don't have the jet of water.

Was it necessary for the front loader to climb up on the pile of gravel? Or, did the operator see me taking a picture and decide to strike a pose?

2020 July 30, Thursday

All done! The culvert will now carry water from one side of the street to the other, hopefully helping things to drain better during the Winter and Spring.

2020 July 31, Friday

I'll end off with a lovely bouquet of flowers, given to me by my Grandfather. He asked my Aunt and Uncle to give them to me, but they kept them for a while at their house because they were so lovely. Eventually they gave them to my parents, who also kept them for a bit to appreciate before handing them off to me. "Planty" of love to go around!
