In 2020 I managed to take a photo (nearly) every day, and I figured I would resurrect that resolution for 2022. I rang in the new year while visiting my brother and his family. I spent most of the Christmas holiday in isolation so we could safely turn the year together.

I enjoyed spending time with my brother, sister-in-law, niece, and nephew, as well as my parents. Still, we missed seeing my sister and her family. Though the calendar had recently switched from autumn to winter, the weather was more rainy than snowy. We got in a few walks, but spent most of our time playing inside.

My first cousin (once removed) Germaine is an expert quilter. This Christmas she gave me a beautiful quilt. It's very warm and has some fascinating fabrics, including a few bright yellow squares which unexpectedly feature spiders.

I'm presenting this photo out of order. It's the Halifax Central Library, which is marked with a big, bright "L". I snapped this photo while on my way to work. Spring Garden Road has reopened after its streetscaping work. I applaud the idea to widen the sidewalks, given that it's one of the busiest pedestrian streets in the city. I shake my head in frustration, though, that instead of using that width for walkable area, they filled it with giant concrete planters. Alas, it feels only barely wider than it was before.
Near the end of 2021 I bought a new lens. It was the equivalent of a film camera's "nifty fifty" - a size format highly regarded by many photographers. I give it a run, but it didn't float my boat, so I returned it. Maybe a week or two later my Mom mentioned that I should do more close-up photography. Since I was already keen to expand my horizons, I waited for a Boxing Day sale and scored a new macro lens. I think it's a great compliment to my big wide-angle telephoto; between those two I can cover landscapes, long-distance shots, and now very close-up "macro" photography. I've leapt with gusto at exploring the tiny worlds all around me.
That got me thinking of Owl Magazine, an outdoor and wildlife rag to which my brother subscribed as a kid. My favourite part of it was a regular feature located on the back page which showed close-up or cropped shots of everyday objects that the reader had to figure out. I figured I'd riff on that theme. Here are ten photos for you to identify:

You can rely on me to hold things together,
I'm good in the rain, but not in cold weather.
Put me on clothing and it becomes hipper.
Have you already guessed that I am a _ _ _ _ _ _?

Much laud is due to the Scottish grain,
At breakfast-time I begin my reign.
My milk beats a cow's, you can have no doubt,
I make great cakes too! I'm the un-humble _ _ _!

Cinching me can be a New Year's resolution
(Eating more veggies is oft the solution).
With this tactile pattern, my style can be felt,
But a D-ring is more commonly found on a _ _ _ _.

You may want to keep me within easy reach
If people might ask you, "where is the beach?"
Use me on your back to lift each jar well...
Your muscles will grow, for I'm a _ _ _ _ _ _ _.

If you had four legs and thicker hair
You too could be a _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.
But since you don't, admit defeat,
I'll hold up my end, just take a seat.

To test your blood's glucose, one drop is ample.
You could use a knife to extract a sample,
But that is unsafe, so please don't chance it!
Use me instead; I am a _ _ _ _ _ _.

If you're too weak to hold your dishes at length,
It's time to develop your forearm strength.
If you can't pinch wet plates onto the drip drainer,
Work out on me, a handy _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.

I'm milked from a lifeform fiercer than a cow,
Producing me requires genetic know-how.
I am insulin, that is no lie,
But what bacteria makes me?
Would you believe _. _ _ _ _!

Have I caught your eye with my anodised screw?
Are you mesmerised by its pretty blue hue?
You can set me loose with just your knuckle,
That's the primary use for a camera-strap _ _ _ _ _ _.

As a pun, we are a place where only optimists can live,
But to be realistic, an average shake is what we give.
Our cubic kin may find that just six sides suffice,
We two are icosahedral, though still a _ _ _ _ of _ _ _ _.

Congratulations! This is the last round.
In the palm of your hand is where I am found.
During Covid I connect each dour shut-in,
Before you can call, hit the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.
