Daily Photo: February 01-14

For 2020, I am photographing every day, and posting the best of each day in half-month increments.

2020 February 01, Saturday

There's little surprise in snowy days piling up as we enter February. My strategy for a wintry night is a cozy relax with chips and a show. I've been keenly watching what I eat and trying to stay active in the hopes of shedding a bit of extra flab. Still, even that must yield to the occasional helping of storm chips. In case you're wondering, the frozen frame in the background is from the opening sequence of The Expanse.

The downside of relaxing all night is finding all there is to shovel in the morning! As it happens, I have the best neighbours in the world, and one of them with a plow is quick to dig me out. That just leaves a bit to do around the car... And the car itself! Par for the course, we had lots of wind along with the snow, which led to some interesting drifts on top of my beleaguered vehicle.

2020 February 03, Monday

My parents are away, visiting my brother and his family along with my sister and her son. While they are gone I regularly head to their place to check in on Declan the cat. He always seems happy to get a good rub. I don't think I would enjoy having a pet of my own full-time, but I could definitely be happy renting a good cat or dog every now and then.

What can I say, I'm a sucker for pretty clouds, especially at twilight! This sky was amazing, it changed from moment to moment. There didn't seem to be much wind on the ground, but the sky was just a river of shifting clouds. To me, in this slice of time it looked like a giant bird spreading its wings over the world.

My go-to drink this year is a little bit of frozen fruit (In this case two blackberries and a cherry) covered in boiling water and a just a little bit of oat milk. It's tasty and warm - the perfect drink for a chilly February day! The gorgeous mug was a gift.

2020 February 06 and 07, Thursday and Friday

After a month of procrastination, I have finally finished my Tortles! I did one on the sixth and one on the seventh. I think I'm beginning to get a bit better at painting these, though my eyes could still use work. In real life those eyes are tiny, tiny, tiny! The models are under 4cm tall; it takes a remarkable lot of concentration to finish one! Photographing them can also be a challenge. In both cases I used a macro converter on my zoom lensto get up close and personal. On my laptop, they're larger than life! It's a nifty effect, but it makes focusing really difficult - you'll notice that the first one's staff and the second one's flame are not as sharp as the rest of them. On the upside, the backgrounds are that creamy bokeh we all love so much.

2020 February 08, Saturday

I remember playing with these Brio trains when I was a little whippersnapper. Now, it's my niblings who assemble tracks and push the engine and cars around... Ha! Who am I kidding? I totally made this track and definitely played with the train.

Snowing, freezing rain, melting, more cold... It all leads to fascinating tiny snow ledges!

2020 February 10, Monday

When I'm painting my little D&D figurines I wipe my brush off on a bit of paper towel. After a few are done I end up with a streaky rainbow effect.

The most essential item for playing D&D is a good imagination. Following that, it's very handy to have a character sheet. The layout of the sheets can vary a bit. This one, for example, is one I custom made in Excel; it self-calculates some of the necessary stats. I took this photo in the morning, thinking that I would have my usual Tuesday-night session. That ended up getting cancelled... More snow!

I went to my brother's house, where my parents and sister were finishing up their big visit. Apparently they found a costume shop a few days before I arrived! In this shot my sister's son explores his grandmother's new face.

Here's my brother and his family. They sure do look spiffy in their outfits!

This picture captures my siblings reading with my niblings. My niece has outstanding literary ability for someone not yet in primary. She already reads near a grade-three level!
