Daily Photo 2022: Feb. 01-15

2022 February 01
As of the beginning of February 2022, my best bench-press is an unimpressive 30 lbs, which is only 13.6 kg, plus whatever the bar weighs. It's likely a poor sign when one has to add the line, "plus whatever the bar weights"! Here's hoping I end up snapping a weightier photo later in the year.

This jewellery box of a photo is... A photo of a jewellery box. Years ago my grandmother received chocolates in it, and later kept buttons in it. I always loved investigating the treasure chest and its contents. Eventually she moved her buttons elsewhere and gave me the box.

Is it a shovel? Is it a tree? It's an up-arrow! Specifically, it is the up-arrow on my clackity old keyboard.

My photo for 2022 January 10 was part of series of riddles, and featured lancets for testing blood glucose levels. I received a complaint that the picture showed the lancets in a mesh net, which obscured them somewhat. In recompense, here isa clearer view. I still have yet to figure out why someone thinks making sharps in child-luring candy colours is a good idea.

Sometimes the idea for a photograph seems easy, but actually taking it turns out to be tricky. That's the case with this. It's the v-neck collar of a T-shirt. I've always liked it because the collar turns in on itself here at the sternum. During shooting I had great trouble getting the blue colour to not look grey, and this result is somehow more turquoise than the real collar. The zoom is quite close; the band of the collar is about 20cm wide.

It would have been more organized had I taken this photo on the third; it's a pendant I keep in my grandmother's button-box. I bought it while on exchange in Germany. It's lapis lazuli. For nearly ten thousand years folks have been mining the mineral simply because it looks nice. I am certainly not going to argue with ten millennia of history.

This is the clip of a metal mechanical pencil; I have a matching pen. It's the pencil I use for running my weekly Dungeons & Dragons sessions.

I set out to photograph some coloured pencils, and ended up with this. It's the business end of some Kelly forceps. Why do I keep a set of forceps in with my coloured pencils? There's usually logic to the things I do, but whatever led to this longstanding arrangement is beyond my memory.

This is shredded cheddar. I haven't run into any trouble switching my bovine-milk for oat milk, I nearly never eat beef, and with regret I can do without yoghurt. Cheese, though, is a bit of cattle climate collapser I haven't been able to kick.

I do believe my keys were the very first thing I tried to shoot with this macro lens when I got it. As one might expect with a new tool, I didn't do a very good job. Well, I've still yet to master a decent shot of a key. The ring, however proved easier.

This is taken with the macro lens, but not at full zoom. It is a pile of highlighters at my desk. I don't often take my camera to work in the Winter, but since I was leaving straight from the office to go visit my brother, I had it with me.

I finally managed to stick with the same theme two days in a row! These brightly-coloured pegs are from a homemade Crazy Rummy board that my sister and father crafted together.

My niblings have a construction toy called Marble Run, with which one can make fanciful roller coasters for glass beads. As much fun as it would have been to try capturing a marble in motion, I didn't bring my tripod with me. Just getting a still photo of a few marbles at the end-of-track terminus was challenging enough!

Regrettably, my life does not have a romantic component, so St. Valentine's Day is not a big thing for me. Many pairs like going to see movies as a date, so here's something I plan on wearing next time I go to the cinema... A belt buckle. It's a replica of one from the video game series Uncharted, which is being made into a film. My best friend and I plan to take in the flick when it releases later this month.

So far I have featured a keyboard-key, a pencil, a pair of forceps, and some highlighters. To round out this unexpectedly office-themed post, here is a binder clip. I'd guess this humble bit of snapping metal is one of the most underrated devices in our modern world. Clips like this have kept (important parts of) the universe together since 1910.
