Daily Photo 2022: June 01-15

Nova Scotia is blessed with a nice, slow Spring. It's like a piece of music, with intricate themes that build on each other. April is a plodding march, May is a strathspey brimming with rainy tension, and finally comes June, the reel where everything crescendos into a delightful dance.

Birds have always been a totem of springtime. These chicks have more of a vicious squawk than a sweet song, but they certainly embody the sense of growth that pervades the season. They were very keen to be fed!

Technically, this bird is outside the Public Gardens, though I think I was in it when I snapped the photo.

Another sign of Spring is the resumption of fountainwater. It's remarkable how turning on the taps shifts things from dreary to vivacious. This is in the Halifax Commons, with the Armoury looming in the background. It's very nice to see that the historic building has emerged from its renovation-cocoon.

These ants were climbing a tree in Victoria Park. I'm glad I was able to capture a decent photo of them. I also really like the moss.

This is the Prince Of Wales Tower in Point Pleasant Park. It's North America's oldest Martello, built in 1796. As towers go, it's comically squat. In its heyday it must have been quite crowded; it had a complement of 200!

The roof of the Prince Of Wales Tower was replaced a few years ago. I'm fairly certain that the original roof of the apse at St. Mary's has also been replaced. It's quite common to photograph the cathedral from the front; I thought it would be fun to snap it from behind.

Golden Chain is one of my favourite shrubs. The first time I remember seeing one was at my host family's home when I was on a university exchange in Kassel, Germany. I tried seeding some a few years back, but they did not thrive. Thankfully, the folks at the Public Gardens have greener fingers than I do!

I had taken a similar photo to this one back on June 04. I liked it so much I tried to repeat the process. This isn't taken at night; the dark background is thanks to the flash and contrasting in post-processing.

What would Spring be without rain? I snapped this outside my window. The brush is presumably a tool for the ongoing renovation of the apartment building's parking structure.

This bee seems to be finding plenty of pollen! We think of bees as being ungainly, but getting deep into flowers must surely take some acrobatic skill.

I was in the middle of photographing something else when I saw movement out of the corner of my eye. I looked over to see this squirrel striking a pose. This photo is my second attempt; my first one has the squirrel looking like a blob in front of some beautifully-focused leaves.

Here is a closeup of some steel wool, taken on another rainy day. Seeing it in such detail really makes me appreciate the manufacturing process which must be needed to form it.

A friend of mine will be visiting from out of province during the last week of June. I hope by then we've got the rain out of our system! Truth be told, I am certain it'll be a time regardless of the weather. Anyway, on another rainy day, I found my own rainbow, in my coloured pencils. It worked, too! The next day was sunny.

I was lucky enough to snap a fledgling gull, which is a far less common sight than an adult. This one was on the roof of the Halifax Central Library.

I often whittle down a crop of good shots to pick just one for a day's SnapDash. Since the fifteenth is the final day of this post, I decided to throw curating to the wind and show off five nice pictures. I took them all on an extended return commute from work. I took the long way back, passing by the waterfront.
