Daily Photo 2022: Oct. 01-15

This year, I blinked and Thanksgiving was over. With so much on the go, time flew past. Now that I am preparing this post, I'm finally taking a moment to reflect on the blessings in my life.

This unassuming photo actually has a lot to tell. The main subject is the spine of a book on architectural graphics. It's from my days as a college kid. I'd had a decade-long career before going back to school for my architectural studies, despite having wanted to enter that field even as a child. Additionally, the photo is taken in my tiny little home office (A spot designed as a storage room) in my Halifax apartment. That represents the efforts I've taken to follow this career, leaving my home and family in Antigonish. Lastly, in the dim background is a painting that reminds me of my sister, who lives far away. I am thankful for her and her family.

The next two photos are of kite line. The first is taken with my wide-angle zoom lens, and the second with my macro lens.My efforts at Kite Aerial Photography are still halting at best. I'll chalk these photos as a thankfulness for perseverance, even when things get tangled up. I'd also say they remind me to be thankful that I have leisurely pursuits like photography and flying kites. That's a luxury open to a rather small percentage of people in the world.

Thanksgiving often coincides or happens near my birthday. The next two shots show some birthday treats. The first is a cupcake from my coworkers, and the second is a sundae that my Dad made for me. It's nice having a festival of harvest and thankfulness mingle with a birthday; I think it puts me in a good frame of mind as I reflect on the year gone by and look forward to the future. I'm definitely thankful to have such good coworkers, and such loving parents.

As an aside, the photo from October eighth has a board game in the background. It's important to note that I had an excellent birthday weekend that included games with my parents and a trip to Cape Breton for a family get-together. I am very thankful for the chance to know three of my grandparents as an adult.

Here's a shot of some storm-damage on my parent's property. Post-Hurricane Fiona knocked down a large number of trees. While action to remove the trunks and branches was quick, the real work is in dealing with the stumps and landscaping. Despite the location of the trees being between my parents' house and the local cemetery, as I far as I know the uprooting hasn't disturbed any graves. That's certainly worth being thankful for, and also that my parents didn't suffer any serious damage or injury in the storm.

This funny, lumpy unit is the injection device for my blood glucose sensor. Essentially, it's a little catapult, a spring-mounted thing that pushes a needle into my skin to deposit the sensor. Immediately afterwards, the needle comes out, typically without any blood or serious pain. I am thankful to have access to medical care when I need it! Alas, that too is a rarity on the global scale.

I think this is Bolivia. It is an architectural model in my office which I am pretty sure shows an area of La Paz. It's always piqued my interest, but I am not sure what building(s) are projects of my firm. In fact, I doubt any of them are! I suspect it may actually be a school project from one of our architects; he is Bolivian. Maybe someday I will ask him about it. For now, I am thankful that there are still mysteries left in the world.

I'm putting this picture out of chronological order, mostly because I like my October 14th one best of all, and want to end with it. Anyway, as you can see, this shot of a mailbox is taken at a low angle. I was in that mode because I was photographing my nephew as he rode his bike. I am thankful for my brother and his family, who graciously hosted me for a weekend.

It does not get much more idyllic than this photograph! This is a winery in the Annapolis Valley. The vines are gently draped in netting to protect them from a local starling flock. When I set up to take this shot I knew the leading lines were nice, but the results are even better than what I had hoped-for. Life is lovely, and the path forward, inviting. It's impossible not to be thankful for that!
