Daily Photo - October 16-31

For 2020, I am photographing every day, and posting the best of each day in half-month increments.

2020 October 16, Friday

Late October has a reputation for being the spooky time of year. It seems appropriate to kick off this entry with some nice dewy cobwebs.

The weather certainly had a spooky bent. For folks South of the border, "FDR" stands for a twentieth-century president. Here, it stands for "Fog, Drizzle, and Rain". October is a great month for FDR days. They can make for moody pictures.

2020 October 18, Sunday

The Sun decided to show itself just in time for a walk on Sunday afternoon. I got several lovely pictures. As I sometimes do, I put a selection of them to my family for a vote to see which one I would post. A shot of a fallen apple was ranked best. I am including the runner-up, a leafy branch.

2020 October 19, Monday

I went to a site inspection for work and came across this bucket of old doorknobs. You really never know what you'll find on a worksite!

2020 October 20, Tuesday

My Tuesday-evening D&D group is continuing through the pandemic by way of virtual teleconferencing. One advantage of playing from home is that I have easy access to all my books and paraphernalia. This outstanding dice tower was a birthday gift from my friend Jamie. He built it with a 3D printer.

2020 October 21, Wednesday

I am blessed to be friends with a plumber. He came by and connected the toilet and sink in my downstairs washroom. Not pictured is nifty a sewage geyser that pipes the outflow up to the municipal drain, which is at a higher elevation than my basement floor. Also notable is the toilet paper holder, which was a housewarming gift from my brother. He did a lot of research to find the best holder design in the world. It comes from Japan. The Japanese are well-known as the global masters of washroom design.

It's come to my attention that I have a lot of small boxes. I actually have a set of two like this. I like how it has the classic shape of a treasure casket. The map detail on the top is like icing on the cake.

2020 October 23, Friday

Alright, we're back to the washroom again! This photo shows off the mirror, shelf, and towel rack that my Dad put up. One the 'someday' to-do list is a trim between the two paint colours, a vanity light, and eventually a tub. For now, I am tickled to have a functional powder room. Plumbing and drainage are one of Humanity's oldest inventions, dating at least as far back as the pre-ancient city of Mohenjo-Daro (Way before Rome!). Some people tiptoe around discussing sanitation, but I firmly believe it is one of civilization's finest achievements.

2020 October 24, Saturday

Late October and early November is the busiest time at the Legion. The mortar on the new stonework was barely dry when the day came to dedicate the relocated and renovated cenotaph. Because of the pandemic, the dedication service couldn't be the big public event that was originally envisioned. In the same way, the Remembrance Day ceremony will be a broadcast rather than a gathering.

2020 October 25, Sunday

This is my downstairs common room. It is partially a living room, partially an office, and partially a gym. On the 25th I rearranged it into this formation. The refresh was inspired by the installation of the washroom, and also because my parents stayed with me for a while as they prepared for the Cenotaph ceremony.

2020 October 26, Monday

I was slightly surprised that the trees by the shore seemed ignored by the birds of prey throughout the Summer, after being so frequently used earlier in the year. Now the spot seems back in vogue!

2020 October 27, Tuesday

Sometimes I wonder if I'm crazy. Sometimes the whole world seems insane. Thankfully, I have a box for when that happens. I keep these boulders there, just as proof that I haven't lost (all) my marbles.

2020 October 28, Wednesday

My folks were visiting when that bird returned and perched atop the fir tree. Just then, my sister and nephew video-called. My Mom went out to wave to the bird, with my nephew watching on.

2020 October 29, Thursday

For the moment, my family's in-person games night continue. I went over in time for supper, which was stew. Here's my Dad trying it.

2020 October 30, Friday

Since I posted a supper-picture, it seems only right to follow that up with a dessert picture! A slice of this pecan pie was quite tasty.

2020 October 31, Saturday

I considered getting a spooky picture for Halloween... I considered posting one of the colcannon I made with some improvised ingredients (I didn't have cabbage, turnip, or ham, so I switched them for spinach and sliced turkey)... In the end, though, I couldn't get past the pretty Fall colours along the railway and estuary.
